Among many letters and books he wrote here is the first translation of the New Testament into the German language. The Wartburg also is important for many other aspects of German history. In the 13th century it was the place of a minstrel contest which later made the story for Wagner's opera "Tannhauser." The tour will highlight the life and work of St Elisabeth. Also the original black-red-golden German flag, used at a student’s meeting at the Wartburg in 1817, is displayed.

Visitors will learn why, how, and with whom Luther translated the Bible and what impact his work had on language, literature, and music.
