I Told You This Was No Boating Accident!

Late yesterday the story hit the media like a thunder clap that Janet Mefferd was silenced by the Evangelical Industrial Complex.

The story written by Jonathan Merritt of the Religion News Service says it all. Wrote Merritt:

Religion writers at various outlets including Religion Dispatches, Patheos, and Urban Christian News, are reporting that Ingrid Schlueter, a part-time assistant producer for syndicated radio show host Janet Mefferd has resigned. According to these reports, Schlueter claims that the resignation is a result of the Mark Driscoll “situation”:

I was a part-time, topic producer for Janet Mefferd until yesterday when I resigned over this situation. All I can share is that there is an evangelical celebrity machine that is more powerful than anyone realizes. You may not go up against the machine. That is all. Mark Driscoll clearly plagiarized and those who could have underscored the seriousness of it and demanded accountability did not. That is the reality of the evangelical industrial complex.

…I’ve read much speculation online, which is understandable given the confusing situation, most of it dead wrong. Being limited in what I can share, let me just say that truth tellers face multiple pressure sources these days. I hosted a radio show for 23 years and know from experience how Big Publishing protects its celebrities. Anything but fawning adulation for those who come on your show (a gift of free air time for the author/publisher by the way) is not taken well. Like Dr. Carl Trueman so aptly asked yesterday in his column at Reformation 21, does honest journalism have any role to play in evangelicalism now? (It was rhetorical.) My own take on that question is, no, it does not. The moment hard questions are asked, the negative focus goes on the questioner, not the celebrity, when there is something that needs scrutiny. Those who have the temerity to call out a celebrity have tremendous courage. The easiest thing in the world is to do fluffy interviews with fluffy guests on fluffy books. So hats off to those like Janet who have the courage to ask at all. And my own opinion on Mr. Driscoll is that despite the bravado, despite the near silence of his Reformed peers and enablers, his brand is damaged, and damaged by his own hand.

Like I said on Thurday's installment of Fighting for the Faith, "this was no boating accident!" We are dealing with a Great White Shark that viciously attacks anyone who would dare ask the tough questions of celebrity pastors whose walks do not line up with their talk and whose actions and teachings do not line up with sound Biblical doctrine.

The Evangelical Industrial Complex (EIC) has learned that there is millions upon millions of dollars to be made by mimicking the world's celebrity driven/product driven culture. It was the EIC that gave us the Emergent Church, Rob Bell, The Purpose-Driven Movement, The Prayer of Jabez, CircleMaker Prayers, Steven Furtick and his Narcigesis, Perry Noble and his verbal beating of Christ's sheep who are starving for Biblical substance in venues that call themselves Christian Churches, and now they're giving us books where the celebrity author cuts corners and conveniently "borrows" from other authors without giving them proper credit and attribution.

I know first-hand about the thuggish mafia tactics of the EIC. I was threatened with arrest when I showed up to attend and report on the Elephant Room — Round 2, despite the fact that I paid for a $100 ticket to attend.

The EIC is not interested in promoting or teaching sound Biblical doctrine or building up the body of Christ. They're interested in making obscene profits by promoting their stable of manufactured and contrived "Christian" celebrities. They don't care if their super stars teach the truths of scripture accurately. What they care about is that the evangelical subculture purchases the merchandise churned out by their untouchable mega stars. Sadly, so much of what passes today as Christian Media & Journalism has turned into nothing more than a rubber stamp approval and promotion of the merchandise of these young, hip crowd pleasers.

Mark Driscoll, whom we now know is the CO-author of the book, A Call to Resurgence asks the question, "will Christianity have a future or a funeral?" If Christianity is going to have a future, then it needs to repent and demand that the EIC be dismantled and its mega celebrities be held accountable for their sins and their false doctrine. If this doesn't happen then Christianity will have a funeral, at least in the western world, as true Christians are persecuted and silenced for pointing out that the EIC's celebrities are not building up the body of Christ but poisoning it from within.

Preachers Who Are in Hell For Other People's Sins: The Real Cost of Remaining Silent in the Face of Sin & Heresy

Evangelicals today tolerate every false teacher and impenitent sinner (especially if he or she is a celebrity pastor). But, they will NOT and do NOT tolerate anyone who identifies false teachers or obstinate sinners who refuse to repent of their sins & be forgiven.
This Evangelical attitude does not honor Christ and is manifested in those who are ignorant of what the scriptures teach and demand of Christians. Evangelicals today demand unity at all costs, even at the cost of truth and their own souls and as the Luther quote below shows, they demand that pastors be silent regarding sin and false teaching. However, what these parishioners do no realize is that their demand for silence and unity is also a demand that pastors burn in hell for their congregations' sins.
If you are in the ministry and see that you have rascals and knaves, fornicators, adulterers, and robbers in your parish, you must say: “Since this is my duty, I will point out sins to peasants, burghers, and noblemen, and rebuke them for these without paying attention to their complaints when they say: ‘Look here, you are defaming me!’ ” For if I held back, I would make myself guilty of your sin. And why should I go to hell for you? They might retort: “Well, I am not asking you to do this; I am not forcing you.” Yes, this may be true. Still you do not want me to reprove you, and you refuse to let me upbraid you for your vices. You expect me to hold my peace, although I occupy an office which requires me to reprove sin, as the prophet Ezekiel does in chapters three and thirty-three, when he declares: “So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. If I say to the wicked to turn from his way, and you give him no warning or speak to warn him, to save his life, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand” (Ezek. 3:17 ff.; 33:7 ff.). Do you suppose it is a small matter to burden a ruler with such a responsibility? This burden has been imposed on the poor preachers, as it has on all who hold other offices, such as burgomasters, princes, and government officials. They should not keep silence in the presence of sin; nor should they themselves sin. For if I see adultery or other sins in people and neglect to take the sinners to task, God will visit their sins on me. We members of the secular and of the ecclesiastical realm have been ordered to punish wrongdoing. But no one does so. What is going to become of you, great kings and teachers in the church, who hear and see so much crime and sin but hush it up and do not punish it? Thus many people go to hell for the sins of others.

Pastor As Prophet

We ourselves, too, are prophets or sons and pupils of the prophets. Nor is it necessary that future events be revealed to us. For the office of a prophet it is enough that we understand Scripture and are able to teach others and also to help one another with prayers. For he who is not a prophet is unable to teach, pray, and do any good work.
Therefore the name “prophet” belongs equally to all Christians, and he who denies this also denies that he has been baptized and has been instructed through the Word.

Playing the Pharisee Card

By Todd Wilken

I have been called a Pharisee more times than I can remember. It goes with the territory. I host a conservative Christian radio talk show. I publicly defend the teachings and practices of the historic Church. I also publicly point out false teaching and practices in the Church today. For these reasons alone, some believe that I deserve to be called a Pharisee.

But I’m not alone. Today, the label “Pharisee” is applied to many Christians just like me—perhaps you’re one of them. We are Christians who cherish God’s Word, the Church’s historic Creeds, confessions and practices. …

When we see the Church abandoning these things to follow the latest fads and entertainments, we lament. When we see the Gospel itself being left behind in the Church’s rush to mimic popular culture, we are grieved. And when we question the Church’s infatuation with the spirit of the age, we are labeled Pharisees.

The “race card” is a political term of art made famour during the 1988 presidential race between George H. W. Bush and Michael Dukakis. In today’s presidential politics, we also have the “gender card.” The Race and Gender Cards aren’t designed to rise the legitimate issues surrounding race or gender. Instead, both the Race and Gender Cards are political tactics that exploit racial and gender divisions among voters, and appeal to the worst racial and gender sterotypes. In American politics, the Race and Gender Cards are played to discredit someone by implying that he is racist or sexist.

Just as politicians and pundits play the Race Card or the Gender Card, many in the Church are playing the “Pharisee Card.”

Just like the Race or Gender Cards, the Pharisee Card is not designed to raise a legitimate issue of doctrine or practice. Rather, the Pharisee Card is used to discredit someone by implying that he is narrow, rigid, and unloving—a Pharisee. Most often these days, the Pharisee Card is played to portray a fellow Christian as a “doctrinal purist,” resistant to change, and therefore, unconcerned for the lost.

The Pharisee Card is a powerful weapon. Most of its punch comes from the fact that, during His earthly ministry, Jesus did often condemn the Pharisees. The Pharisee Card is intended to be tantamount to the condemnation of Jesus Himself.

Why did Jesus so often condemn the Pharisees? Was it because (as those who play the Pharisee Card assume) the Pharisees were ultra-conservative doctrinal purists, with no love for the lost? No.

Were the Pharisees Concerned with Doctrinal Purity?

The Pharisee Card is played against Christians who are concerned with doctrinal purity. When used this way, the Pharisee Card is intended to discredit the doctrinal purist and silence any further questions about false teaching. It works beautifully. Those dealing the Pharisee Card know that many Christians would rather suffer silently under false teaching than speak up and risk being labeled a Pharisee.

The only problem is, Jesus never faulted the Pharisees for being doctrinal purists. He faulted them for being false teachers who abandoned the truth of God’s Word in favor of the erroneous word of man (Matthew 16:11–12; 15:1–9; Mark 7:6–13).

Jesus called Christians who demanded doctrinal purity “disciples,” not “Pharisees.” “If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31–32) In fact, Christians who demand doctrinal purity are really following the example of Jesus, of Paul and the other Apostles (Matthew 7:15; see also Matthew 24:10–11; Mark 9:42; 2 Corinthians 15:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 Timothy 4:16; 6:3–4; Titus 1:7–9; 2:1, 7–8; 1 John 4:1; 2 Peter 3:17).

Were the Pharisees Resistant to Change?

The Pharisee Card is also played in order to discredit Christians who refuse to abandon the historic practices of the Church in favor of the latest innovations. This too works beautifully. Those dealing the Pharisee card know that, to avoid being labeled a Pharisee, many Christians will tolerate an endless succession of fads in worship, music, and ministry. But Jesus never faulted the Pharisees for resisting change. On the contrary, He faulted them for introducing their own innovations and methods in the place of God’s Word.

Dealers of the Pharisee Card will cite Luke 5:36–39 in favor of their own innovations:

And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.”

Was Jesus calling for wholesale change, or warning against it? The new patch ruins the garment. The new wine bursts the wineskins. The context of the parable is a discussion of fasting. Rather than advocating the abandonment of this ancient practice, Jesus instead taught that ancient practices must now be understood and practiced in light of Him and His redemptive work.

Jesus didn’t condemn the Pharisees for retaining ancient paractices, or for resisting change; rather, Jesus concluded the parable by saying, “And no one, after drinking old wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

Were the Pharisees Unconcerned for the Lost?

Christians who demand doctrinal purity and resist compromising change are often accused of being Pharisees with no love for the lost. This is probably the most common use of the Pharisee card today. Those who like to play the Pharisee Card know that Christians will put up with almost anything in the name of missions and evangelism, in order to avoid being called Pharisees.

But Jesus never faulted the Pharisees for being unconcerned for the lost. On the contrary, He said:

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel about on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. (Matthew 23:15)

Jesus had no problem with the missionary zeal of the Pharisees—they were zealous enough; Jesus had a problem with the Pharisees’ soul-damning message. Paul was of the same opinion:

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:2–3)

And Paul spoke from experience. As a former Pharisee, his missionary zeal took him far and wide as a persecutor of the first Christians (Acts 9:1–2; Philippians 3:6).

The Pharisees’ error was not a lack of missionary zeal; it was that their false teaching (however zealously preached) damned rather than saved.

Moreover, contrary to everything the Pharisee Card is meant to imply, just because someone is concerned for doctrinal purity and resistant to theological innovation does not mean that he is unconcerned for the lost. On the contrary, departure from the pure Word, in doctrine and practice, does not help, but hinders the preaching of the Gospel, therefore impeding the mission of the Church. False teaching does not save sinners. Purity in doctrine and practice makes the preaching of the Gospel possible. Purity in doctrine and practice makes the preaching of the Gospel imperative.

The irony is that those most often called Pharisees in the Church today are those most concerned about the lost, and therefore preaching the pure Gospel to them.

The power of the Pharisee Card is based on the mistaken idea that those unwilling to compromise in doctrine and practice are the modern-day counterparts of the ancient Pharisees. This idea has no basis in fact.

Why Did Jesus Really Condemn the Pharisees?

So if Jesus never condemned the Pharisees for bring ultra-conservative doctrinal purists with no love for the lost, why did He condemn them?

Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their apostasy. The Pharisees had abandoned the Old Testament faith and therefore they rejected Jesus Himself (Matthew 8:11–12; 21:42–46; 22:41–46; Luke 7:29–30; 13:28–30; John 5:39, 43–47; Acts 4:10–12; Romans 9:1—11:36; 1 Peter 2:7–8).

The Pharisees taught that salvation was the result of God’s mercy plus man’s obedience. They reduced the faith of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to a system of do’s and don’t's. In this sense, the Pharisees were the inventors of what we call today “rules for living,” and the first preachers of “how-to” sermons.

Jesus condemned the Pharisees for softening the demands of the Law. Because they taught that human works contributed to salvation, the Pharisees had to make the Law more “user-friendly.” The Pharisees diluted the Law’s requirement of perfect obedience with manageable human rules that could be kept (Matthew 5:17–48).

A compromised Law meant a compromised Gospel. Jesus condemned the Pharisees because they abandoned God’s Word for the word of man. In this sense, the Pharisees were really the Liberals of their day.

Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and self-righteousness. This hypocrisy and self-righteousness was most often the subject of Jesus’ condemnations. But it was merely a symptom of the Pharisees’ false faith in their own obedience:

He also told this parable to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-gatherer. The Pharisee stood and was praying thus to himself, ‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax-gatherer, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God be merciful to me, the sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:9–14)

The Pharisees trusted their own obedience and moral progress. In this sense, the Pharisees were the original proponents of the victorious life.

Jesus condemnation of the Pharisees had nothing to do with doctrinal purity, resistance to change, or lack of missionary zeal. It had everything to do with the false hope of human obedience.

The Real Pharisees?

Who are the real Pharisees today? You are. I am. You, me, and every sinner—but not in the way that the players of the Pharisee Card say we are.

All of us are more willing to trust our own obedience than trust the perfect obedience of Jesus Christ. All of us soften the Law’s perfect demands so that we can say we’ve kept them. All of us are therefore inclined to hypocrisy and self-righteousness. All of us are natural-born Pharisees.

Now, if someone wants to call me a Pharisee for that reason, I will gladly and repentantly be called a Pharisee.

But I will not be called a Pharisee for loving and defending pure doctrine. I will not be called a Pharisee for resisting the ill-conceived innovation and compromising change in the Church. I will not be called a Pharisee for demanding that the Gospel we preach to the lost be pure.

Some say that the pure Gospel is an impossible dream. I disagree. I hear it preached every week—more often than not by those Christians who are wrongly labeled Pharisees.

Those who play the Pharisee Card hope to dismiss Christians like you and me as ultra-conservative doctrinal purists with no love for the lost. But like a fifth Ace up the sleeve, the Pharisee Card is a cheat. Those who play it ignore the real errors of the real Pharisees. They wrongly apply the name to those who stand in the way of false teaching, compromising change and a watered-down Gospel. In the end, the Pharisee Card amounts to nothing more than name-calling. And, like the Race or Gender Cards are in politics, in the Church, the Pharisee Card is always the sign of a losing hand.

554787The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?
by F. F. Bruce
— Because Christianity claims to be a historical revelation, says Bruce, the question of the reliability of the documents on which it was founded is a crucial one. This modern classic in the field of New Testament studies offers a compelling defense of biblical truth. F.F. Bruce, one of evangelicalism's most respected scholars, makes a clear case for the historical trustworthiness of the Christian Scriptures, drawing on evidence from the New Testament documents themselves as well as extrabiblical sources. Concise chapters explore the canon and dating of the New Testament, the nature of the Gospels (including a look at miracles), the life and writings of Paul, and archaeological and literary evidence. Including here a completely updated bibliography, Bruce's long-standing affirmation of the New Testament is still as authoritative and engaging as ever.

BauckhamJesusJesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony
by Richard Bauckham
— This book argues that the four Gospels are closely based on eyewitness testimony of those who knew Jesus. Noted New Testament scholar Richard Bauckham challenges the prevailing assumption that the accounts of Jesus circulated as "anonymous community traditions," asserting instead that they were transmitted in the name of the original eyewitnesses. To drive home this controversial point, Bauckham draws on internal literary evidence, study of personal names in the first century, and recent developments in the understanding of oral traditions. "Jesus and the Eyewitnesses" also taps into the rich resources of modern study of memory and cognitive psychology, refuting the conclusions of the form critics and calling New Testament scholarship to make a clean break with this long-dominant tradition. Finally, Bauckham challenges readers to end the classic division between the "historical Jesus" and the "Christ of faith," proposing instead the "Jesus of testimony." Sure to ignite heated debate on the precise character of the testimony about Jesus, "Jesus and the Eyewitnesses" will be valued by scholars, students, and all who seek to understand the origins of the Gospels.

515hk7ZOnoLThe Historical Reliability of the Gospels
by Craig L. Blomberg
— For over twenty years, Craig Blomberg's The Historical Reliability of the Gospels has provided a useful antidote to many of the toxic effects of skeptical criticism of the Gospels. Offering a calm, balanced overview of the history of Gospel criticism, especially that of the late twentieth century, Blomberg introduces readers to the methods employed by New Testament scholars and shows both the values and limits of those methods. He then delves more deeply into the question of miracles, Synoptic discrepancies and the differences between the Synoptics and John. After an assessment of noncanonical Jesus tradition, he addresses issues of historical method directly. This new edition has been thoroughly updated in light of new developments with numerous additions to the footnotes and two added appendixes. Readers will find that over the past twenty years, the case for the historical trustworthiness of the Gospels has grown vastly stronger.

1258_w185The Canon of Scripture
by F. F. Bruce
— How did the books of the Bible come to be recognized as Holy Scripture? Who decided what shape the canon should take? what criteria influenced these decisions?

After nearly nineteen centuries the canon of Scripture still remains an issue of debate. Protestants, Catholics and the Orthodox all have slightly differing collections of documents in their Bibles. Martin Luther, one of the early leaders of the Reformation, questioned the inclusion of the book of James in the canon. And many Christians today, while confessing the authority of all of Scripture, tend to rely on only a few books and particular themes while ignoring the rest.

Scholars have raised many other questions as well. Research into second-century Gnostic texts have led some to argue that politics played a significant role in the formation of the Christian canon. Assessing the influence of ancient communities and a variety of disputes on the final shaping of the canon call for ongoing study.

In this significant historical study, F. F. Bruce brings the wisdom of a lifetime of reflection and biblical interpretation to bear in answering the questions and clearing away the confusion surrounding the Christian canon of Scripture. Adept in both Old and New Testament studies, he brings a rare comprehensive perspective to his task.

Though some issues have shifted since the original publication of this book, it still remains a significant landmark and touchstone for further studies.

New-testament-introduction-donald-guthrie-hardcover-cover-artNew Testament Introduction
by Donald Guthrie
— Twenty years after its first release in one volume, Donald Guthrie has revised his widely acclaimed New Testament Introduction. A careful recasting of a benchmark evangelical work, this new edition provides a fixed point for surveying the books of the New Testament. Noting the issues raised by the past two decades of biblical scholarship, Guthrie engages the issues of authorship and authenticity, purpose and structure, historical context and cultural setting. In these discussions, as well as in the notes and bibliographies, he draws on a wealth of recent scholarly research which gives added value to this classic resource.

6605Text of the New Testament, The: From Manuscript to Modern Edition
by J. Harold Greenlee
— The Text of the New Testament is a brief introduction for the lay person into the process whereby the New Testament came to be. It describes the basics of ancient writing tools, manuscripts, the work of scribes, and how to think about differences in what the various manuscripts say. This is a revised and expanded edition with a completely new chapter on how contemporary English translations fit in with our understanding of the New Testament text. Geared to the lay person who is uninformed or confused about textual criticism, Greenlee begins this volume by explaining the production of ancient manuscripts. He then traces the history of the development of the New Testament text. Readers are next introduced to the basic principles of textual criticism, the concept of variant readings, and how to determine which variant has the greatest likelihood of being the original reading. To illustrate the basic principles, several sample New Testament texts are examined. The book concludes by putting textual criticism in perspective as involving only a minute portion of the entire New Testament text, the bulk of which is indisputably attested by the manuscripts.

Introduction-new-testament-textual-criticism-j-harold-greenlee-paperback-cover-artIntroduction to New Testament Textual Criticism
by J. Harold Greenlee
— F. F. Bruce commented on the first edition, "I am glad to give it my warm commendation. As an introduction to the criticism of the New Testament it has . . . no equal in English." Since Bruce's comments on the original edition thirty years ago, this clear and comprehensive introduction to New Testament textual criticism has remained a popular text for beginning and intermediate students. Diagrams, an appendix of Latin terms, supplementary readings, a bibliography, and an index make this revised edition an invaluable resource.

Screen Shot 2013-11-28 at 10.01.09 AMHistory and Christianity
by John Warwick Montgomery
— A stirring defense of the faith by one of Christianity's ablest defenders.

Dr. John Montgomery, scholar, theologian and apologist for the faith, developed this book from a seminar he presented at the University of British Columbia. Readable and convincing, the book is divided into four sections:

Section One deals with four basic errors usually committed by those who attack the historicity of the New Testament.

Section Two defends the accuracy of the New Testament documents, using tests which are commonly applied to any ancient document.

Section Three, entitled "God Closes In," is a powerful defense of the truly divine and truly human nature of Christ.

Section Four clearly shows that if Jesus were not the Son of God, the only other alternatives are either liar or lunatic.

The book includes the transcript of a panel discussion in which Dr. Montgomery convincingly argues from the above four points to demonstrate their application for the reader. Here is excellent material for class discussion or individual study, particularly suited to helping young people combat humanistic concepts of the Bible and Christianity.

What if Rick Warren Misunderstood Jesus' Fishing Metaphor?

Rick Warren, one of the innovators responsible for imposing the “Seeker-Sensitive Model of Church” upon the Body of Christ justifies his radical innovations by alluding to Christ’s statement to Peter that He’d make him a “fisher of men”. In other words, Evangelism, according to Jesus is akin to fishing. Rick Warren picks up on Jesus’ fishing metaphor and says:

“If you’re going to be good at fishing, you’ve got to learn to think like a fish. If you’re going to be an effective fisher of men, you’ve got to think like a lost person. Here’s the problem. Unfortunately, the longer you are a Christian, the less you think like an unbeliever. I don’t think like a non-Christian; I think like a Christian. In fact, I think like a pastor. That’s even worse! It’s two generations removed from the people I want to reach.

You can tell just how differently pastors think than lost people when you look at church advertisements in the newspaper. You’ll see advertisements like, “Preaching the inspired, inerrant Word of God.” Who will that appeal to? I know what the inspired, inerrant Word of God is. In fact I believe in it. I’d die for the inspired, inerrant Word. But non-Christians don’t care about your view of inspiration.

Or you’ll see a church advertise “Holy Spirit services.” That’s going to scare people away! Non-Christians don’t know what you mean by the Holy Spirit. Is that Casper the Friendly Ghost? You must learn to think – and communicate – like a non-believer if you are going to communicate the Gospel to them.

To catch fish, you’ve got to know their habits, their preferences, and their feeding patterns. Certain fish like smooth water. Others are bottom crawlers. Some like rushing water. Others hide under rocks. You’ve got to know what the fish you’re trying to reach like to do. If you’re going to understand and reach non-Christians, you’ve got to begin with their mindset. What if Rick Warren’s understanding of evangelism and fishing is dead wrong? What if Rick Warren has mixed his metaphors and has drawn incorrect conclusions about what it means to be a “fisher of men”? What if the fishing Jesus was referring to was not bait fishing but NET FISHING would that cause you to rethink the Seeker-Sensitive movement and question whether its methodologies are faithful to Jesus’ Biblical methods of evangelism?

It should.

Bait Fishing is to Net Fishing as Deception is to Integrity

Streamer-purpleperil The Purpose-Driven / Seeker Sensitive model of evangelism attempts to attract so-called ‘seekers’ (Rom. 3:11) to attend a church service by radically changing the nature of church. Gone are hymns, and Biblical expository sermons. These have been replaced with culturally appealing rocks shows and practical self-help, felt-needs, life improvement seminars that contain a few ripped out of context verses thrown in to create the illusion that they’re based on the Bible. The model of fishing that Rick Warren is teaching his fleet of ‘fishers of men’ to employ is Bait Fishing. It is important to understand that the primary strategy of bait fishing is deception. Bait fishing deceives unsuspecting fish into believing that they are about to enjoy in their favorite meal but instead they find themselves being killed by a well hidden hook.

Deception is precisely the method employed by Purpose-Driven / Seeker Sensitive ‘evangelists’. They’ve discovered that they can convince unbelievers to come to their churches IF they deceive them by hiding the ‘church hook’ in culturally relevant self-help stage shows. These churches are experts at marketing. They purchase newspaper advertising and send out thousands of mailers promising to give non-Christians the secrets to achieving ‘Red Hot Sex’, financial freedom, and a less-stressful life. But, Biblical Christianity does NOT offer or promise ANY of those things. The truth is that many marriages have been destroyed because one partner has converted to Christianity while the other persisted in their unbelief (Matt. 10:36). Many Christians around the world and in the U.S. struggle to pay their bills while other believers cannot even afford the basic necessities of life. Faith in Jesus does not include a guarantee of wealth or freedom from debt. In fact, financial status has never been a indicator of one’s standing before the Lord (Eph. 6:5, Col. 3:22) God warns us of the dangers of wealth and the love of money (1Tim. 6:10). Furthermore, the Bible does not offer Christians a less stressful life. Around the world Christians are persecuted and martyred for their faith. Rather than offering stress relief, confessing Jesus Christ in many portions of the world is a guarantee for experiencing life threatening danger and the stresses that go with knowing that you have been marked for death (2 Cor. 11:24-28). At its core Purpose-Driven / Seeker-Sensitive “evangelism” engages in lies and deception (bait fishing). That alone should disqualify it from being eployed in ANY church. So what was Jesus talking about when He told the disciples that He would make them ‘fishers of men’?

The fishing that Jesus calls His church to engage in is the same type of fishing that the humble men of Galilee were familiar with. This type of fishing requires them to leave the safety of the shore and head out to the deep water, where the fish are. Once there, they cast their nets into the sea and drag the fish into their boats. There is no disguising a net. There is no deception involved in net fishing. There’s no need to “think like a fish” or to understand what their favorite food is to lure them in. Instead, a fish that is caught via net fishing, one minute is swimming along with its school minding its own business the next minute it is being dragged against its will into a boat.

Isn’t this exactly what Jesus said in John 6:44?

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”

The greek word for "draw" is the word ἑλκύω (helkuo). Here is how BDAG defines this word:

“to move an object from one area to another in a pulling motion, draw, with implication that the object being moved is incapable of propelling itself or in the case of persons is unwilling to do so voluntarily, in either case with implication of exertion on the part of the mover”

Biblic19 Net fishing drags unwilling fish into a boat. Evangelism that utilizes Net Fishing does the exact same thing. The net that the church has been called utitlize is the gospel. The focal message that we are to use for our nets, according to Jesus, is the message of ‘repentance and the forgiveness of sins’ (Luke 24:46-48). If our nets are to be effective at dragging in fish we must preach both repentance (the law) and the forgiveness of sins (the gospel). To omit either of these key points is the equivalent of using a compromised net that is full of gaping holes. Holes make a net useless.

The evangelism / fishing that our Lord calls His church to engage in is Net Fishing. He doesn’t ask us to engage in deception nor would He ever. Instead, he calls us to maintain the integrity of our nets by maintaining the integrity of His Word. We are then to take the nets out into the deep waters of our world and culture and cast them out. God will provide the fish. He will send them into the net. When He does, we are to drag them into the boat. There is no need to change the church and deceptively make it more attractive to unbelievers. Instead, when God sends the fish to our nets we are supposed to drag them in and feed them with the living word of God and the nourishment found in spiritual songs that exalt Jesus Christ, sound doctrine and the proclamation of Jesus' and the salvation He won for us on Calvary's cross.

Net fishing is the ONLY type of fishing that Christians are called to engage in. To be an effective Net Fisher one must always maintain the integrity of the net. Bait Fishing on the other hand, depends on lies and deception. Bait Fishing is the Devil’s method of fishing because Satan is, “a liar and the father of lies.”

What type of fishing does your church's evangelism efforts utilize, Nets or Deception?

Here’s a segment from my radio program that examines this topic from the scriptures by reviewing a sermon by Pastor Ernie Lassman on Luke 5:1-11.

For Whom Do Pastors Exist?

If I had ten dollars for every time I've heard a seeker-driven "pastor" justify his Biblically shallow and vapid "sermons" and the crazy antics that happen in his "church" by claiming that "the church doesn't exist for believers", I'd be able to purchase James MacDonald's home with cash. These seeker-driven antics include such things as playing AC/DC's Highway to Hell to open their Easter service, refusing to preach the Bible with any depth or accuracy, performing Michael Jackson's Thriller, recreating the famous kiss scene from the Spiderman movie and a whole host of other crazy worldly stunts.

When these "pastors" are called out on their Biblically meaningless sermons and their worldly antics the responses are predictable and consistent and usually go something like this:

Example 1

Example 2

Anyone who's been railroaded by these tactics knows that something is way off about these claims being made by seeker-driven "pastors" but don't exactly know how to put their finger on the problem or know how to put it into words, this post will help you do that.

Notice that every time the word "pastor" has appeared, thus far, in this post that I've bolded it and underlined it. That is to help you spot the irony of the statements being made by seeker-driven "pastors" and that irony will help you identify the underlying error in their tactics and methodologies.

Here's the irony...No where in scripture does it say that the church exists for unbelievers. BUT, there are clear passages that state that pastors and elders exist to serve the church, i.e. believers. Therefore, it is ironic and foolish for a pastor, whose job is to serve the church (believers) to justify methods that don't serve Christians by claiming that the church doesn't exist for believers.

Here are the key passages that address this topic. We'll begin by first looking at the passages that discuss spiritual gifts. The reason for this is that the ability to teach God's word is a gift given by the Holy Spirit to certain people within the body of Christ.

The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts is to Build Up the Church Not The World

The Bible teaches that God, The Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different believers for the building up of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4–7). Teaching is one of the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to pastors and this gift is to be used specifically for believers.

Ephesians 4:8–13 states this very clearly:

“(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,”

In clear and unambiguous language God states that shepherds (pastors) and teachers in the church exist to equip the saints (not unbelievers) and to build up the body of Christ (not the world). This is clear and irrefutable.

Those Who Have the Gift To Teach Are Commanded to Feed Christ's Sheep by Teaching the Word of God

The duties of shepherds and teachers within the church are governed by the instructions given by Jesus Christ.

“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” (John 21:15–17)

Notice that in this passage Jesus doesn't tell Peter to entertain goats or dazzle the world. Instead, Christ soberly and firmly reinstates Peter after he'd denied Jesus three times. And Peter was reinstated into ministry and that ministry was to shepherd and feed Christ's sheep. These commands by Jesus to Peter stuck with him his entire life. Peter himself would later exhort elders (pastors) with these words:

“So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.” (1 Peter 5:1–4)

This shepherding language is also use by the Apostle Paul when he addresses the elders of the Church of Ephesus. Here are Paul's words of exhortation:

“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.” (Acts 20:28–31)

It's clear from these passages that pastors are not literal shepherds and that Christians are not literal sheep. All of these images are metaphors that help create a mental picture of the difficult and sacrificial work of pastors. So, when Jesus told Peter to "feed my sheep" what was Jesus referring to? What does a Pastor/Shepherd feed Christ's sheep with?

The answer is simple, the Word of God, and two passages will suffice in demonstrating this fact:

“[Jesus] answered, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 3:14–4:4)

No commentary is needed for these verses because they clearly teach that God's Word is 'sheep food' and that pastors are to be feeding the scriptures to Christ's sheep.

The Bottom Line

The next time you hear a seeker-driven pastor attempt justify his shallow sermons and entertainment driven stunts by claiming that "the church doesn't exist for believers", kindly inform him that regardless of who the church exists for, his job exists to serve believers and Christ's sheep and that if he won't do his job that he's rebelling against Jesus Christ Himself.

Can You Declare That You're the Head And Not The Tail?

Joel Osteen and other wildly popular preachers tell their mega million audiences that their words create their futures and that if they want their best lives now they need to learn how to declare faith filled positive affirmations over their lives. One affirmation in particular these preachers teach their audiences to declare over their lives is that they're "the head and not the tail". They claim that this affirmation is found in Deut. 28:13 and that their teaching is Biblical. But is it? Does Deut. 28:13 teach Christians to declare and affirm that they're "the head and not the tail" and that by doing so they will create positive futures for themselves?

Answer: NO! One merely needs to look at the context of this passage to see what it is really teaching.

Head and not the tail

Context, Context, Context

The context necessary to properly understanding Deut. 28:13 begins in chapter 27. Below, I've posted all of the relevant context necessary to understand this passage. One does not need to be an Old Testament scholar in order to understand what this text is teaching. (I've bolded and underlined the phrase "head and not the tail" so that you can identify its place and roll in this text.)

“Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. And on the day you cross over the Jordan to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them; you shall build an altar to the LORD your God of uncut stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God, and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God. And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”

Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, “Keep silence and hear, O Israel: this day you have become the people of the LORD your God. You shall therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God, keeping his commandments and his statutes, which I command you today.”

That day Moses charged the people, saying, “When you have crossed over the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. And the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice:

“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the LORD, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor’s landmark.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s nakedness.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

“The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. The LORD will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. The LORD will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

“But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

“The LORD will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me. The LORD will make the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. The LORD will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought and with blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. The LORD will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

“The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. And your dead body shall be food for all birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away. The LORD will strike you with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors and scabs and itch, of which you cannot be healed. The LORD will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of mind, and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways. And you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall ravish her. You shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it. You shall plant a vineyard, but you shall not enjoy its fruit. Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat any of it. Your donkey shall be seized before your face, but shall not be restored to you. Your sheep shall be given to your enemies, but there shall be no one to help you. Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all day long, but you shall be helpless. A nation that you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually, so that you are driven mad by the sights that your eyes see. The LORD will strike you on the knees and on the legs with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.” (Deuteronomy 27:1–28:35)

This passage does not teach Christians to declare and affirm that they are the head and not the tail! There isn't a single word mentioned about standing in front of a mirror and decreeing and declaring anything. All of the blessings recorded in this passage are contingent upon obedience to the Mosaic Covenant. If you want to be the head and not the tail then you must first obey all of God's commandments. These blessings are not promised to decreers and declarers they are only promised to obeyers of the Mosaic covenant!

“you shall therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God, keeping his commandments and his statutes, which I command you today.”” (Deut. 27:10)

if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD” (Deut. 28:1)

if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today” (Deut. 28:14)

“But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you” (Deut. 28:15)

By ripping Deut. 28:13 from its context, men like Joel Osteen and others have fabricated a man-made mythological doctrine (Mark 7:6–13) that says that people can create positive futures for themselves by decreeing and declaring positive faith filled words over their lives. But, what is painfully clear when you put Deut. 28:13 back in its proper context is that these preachers have twisted God's Word and are deceiving their followers.

Also, by ripping this passage out of context these false teachers are ignoring the very important historical context of this passage and are not properly distinguishing between the Mosaic Covenant (which Christians are NOT under) and the New Covenant (which Christians ARE under).

This passage is a retelling of the Mosaic Covenant and was spoken to The Children of Israel after they had spent 40 years wandering through the wilderness because of their unbelief (Jude 1:5). Moses, in this passage, is recalling the covenant Israel made with the LORD and reminding them of both its curses, if they disobey, and its blessings, if they obey. Again, the covenant being discussed here is the Mosaic Covenant it is NOT the New Covenant that Christians are under. (For a more complete explanation of the different Biblical covenants take some time to listen to the lecture by Dr. Michael Horton on the covenants in this episode of Fighting for the Faith).

So the next time you hear an über popular preacher, teacher or author tell you that you need to declare that you're "the head and not the tail", you know that they're twisting God's word and teaching false doctrine. Don't listen to them and don't send them any money (because that's what they're really after.)

A New 95 Theses: Challenging The Excesses of American Evangelicalism

A PDF of this document can be downloaded by clicking here.

Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, the public bulletin board of his day. In like manner, we post these 95 theses on the door of the internet. Like the original theses, these are debatable, for we believe that it is through vigorous debate that the spirits are tested and truth is revealed.

In publishing these theses, we do not intend to foment division, but to expose those who are creating division within the body of Christ. We invite all who love the Gospel of Jesus Christ to engage in this debate. We do so in the spirit of the great Reformer, Martin Luther, as we implore the mercies of God upon His Church, for the sake of Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Church and shepherd of our souls.

1. When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said “Repent,” He willed that the whole life of believers should be one of repentance.

2. To “repent” means to be contrite for one’s sins and to trust Jesus Christ and solely in His completed work for one’s forgiveness, life, and salvation.

3. Those who describe the Christian life as purpose-driven deny true repentance, confuse the Law and the Gospel, and obscure the merits of Christ.

4. Impious and wicked are the methods of those who strip mine the scriptures for life tips and principles to apply to their lives in the name of relevance.

5. This devilish disregard for the Gospel wickedly distorts sacred Scripture into a guidebook for living and sows tares among the wheat by filling churches with people who believe the Bible is about them rather than Christ and what He’s done for them.

6. Life tips, stand up comedy, fog machines, a rockin band, and anecdotal stories from the pastor’s life have no power to work true contrition over sins and faith in Jesus Christ.

7. Like clouds without rain, purpose-driven preachers withhold the proclamation of the forgiveness of sins won by Christ on the cross and enslave men’s consciences to the law which they cleverly disguise as so-called “Life Changing Biblical Principles'.

8. By teaching tips for attaining perfect health, debt-free wealth, great sex, and finding your dream destiny the purveyors of relevance obliterate true fear, love and trust in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

9. They are enemies of Christ, who distort the Word of God by tearing verses from their original context in order to use them as proof texts for their self-help, life transforming agendas.

10. Eternal damnation is practically guaranteed for those who've been taught that God’s Word is a recipe book for practical “life principles”.

11. In the name of relevance, our Lord Jesus Christ is demoted to a cheesy third rate life-coach whose “gospel” motivates people to focus even more on themselves by believing that Jesus exists to assist them in achieving the objectives of their narcissistic delusions of grandeur.

12. The core premise of the entire seeker-driven movement is a lie because no one seeks for God. (Rom. 3:11)

13. The reason unbelievers don’t come to church is because they are dead in trespasses and sins and are at war with God (Eph. 2:1–3, Col. 1:21) not because churches sing hymns.

14. The natural man does not naturally seek the Gospel. “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me” (Is. 65:1)

15. The only true Seeker of men’s souls is our Lord Jesus Christ who came to seek and to save the lost by His death on the cross (Luke 19:10).

16. The church that is truly “seeker-sensitive” unashamedly proclaims God’s wrath against our sin and then boldly proclaims His mercy won for us by Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross. (Is. 53:4–11)

17. The preaching of Christ crucified for our sins is a stumbling block to purpose-driven pragmatists and foolishness to church growth gurus.

18. The true gold of the Church is the Most Holy Gospel of the glory and the grace of God.

19. But this treasure is a stench in the nostrils of fallen and sinful men because it exposes man’s complete lack of ability to save himself by his own religious efforts.

20. On the other hand, the fool’s gold of “life applications” is preferred by sinful men, for it creates the illusion of moral progress and a life that is pleasing to God apart from repentance.

21. The gold of the Gospel is the net by which Christ would make us fishers of men.

22. The fool’s gold of “life applications” is a snare by which purpose-driven purveyors of relevance attempt to capture the riches of men and the approval of the world.

23. Helping people find their purpose and/or dream destiny is not the goal of Christian sanctification or Christian preaching.

24. The true church is made up of holy sheep who hear the voice of their Shepherd.

25. How can the sheep hear the voice of their Shepherd when false shepherds rip two or three verses out of context while preaching about themselves?

26. Purveyors of purpose-driven relevance are not shepherds of men’s souls but ravenous wolves in sheep’s clothing who tear apart the sheep while fleecing their wallets.

27. Purveyors of relevance claim that life-applications and biblical principles are the means to reach the unchurched because they meet people’s felt needs.

28. Yet a person’s greatest need is one he does not by nature feel, namely the need for forgiveness and the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ.

29. The true means by which fallen sinners are reached is the preaching of Christ and Him crucified and punished for sinners.

30. The true need that mankind is seeking but does not know is justification by grace alone through faith alone for Christ’s sake alone.

31. Since justification is through faith and not through works, natural man neither seeks it nor desires it.

32. Therefore, the teaching of justification by grace through faith is neither seeker-sensitive nor relevant to a world that by nature seeks self-justification.

33. Regardless of the number of people in attendance, the church does not grow unless men are granted repentance and faith by God through the action of His Word.

34. Scripture clearly teaches that the means by which God grants faith is the hearing of the Word of Christ (the Gospel).(Rom. 10:17)

35. Therefore, even if a multi-site mega church, through their own marketing methods and media prowess were able to draw 100,000 people every Sunday, if the Gospel is not heard and the sacraments are not administered according to the Gospel there is no church and the true Church of Jesus Christ has not grown by a single soul.

36. If numerical growth is a measure of God’s approval, then we must conclude that God approves of Islam and the Mormons.

37. If financial success is a measure of God’s approval, then we must conclude that God approves of pornography and gambling.

38. Cancer and crabgrass both grow rapidly, as does the church that obscures the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

39. The purveying of purpose-driven relevance is the theology of glory; the preaching of Christ crucified for sinners is the theology of the cross.

40. The theologian of glory says that the kingdom of God is visible now in buildings, people, and dollars; the theologian of the cross says that the kingdom of God is an article of faith.

41. The theologian of glory asks “How much?” and “How many?”; the theologian of the cross preaches Christ regardless of how much or how many.

42. The theologian of glory prepares people to receive health, wealth, great sex and earthly happiness; the theologian of the cross prepares people to suffer and die in the faith.

43. The theologian of glory preaches that God wants to grant you favors; the theologian of the cross preaches that the favor of God is a free gift for the sake of Christ crucified.

44. The theologian of glory proclaims 40 days of purpose; the theologian of the cross preaches daily dying to self and rising in Jesus.

45. God established the Church to be a “mouth house” of forgiveness not a madhouse of activity.

46. Christ wills that His voice be heard in His Church and not the voice of man when He says, “He who hears you, hears me.” (Luke 10:16)

47. Purveyors of purpose-driven relevance obscure the voice of Christ and so draw the sheep away from the Good Shepherd.

48. Christ saves from sin and death not by motivating the sinner to commit to life transformation through the application of Biblical Principles, but by dying for their sins and rising from the dead and calling them to repent of their wickedness and trust in Him and what He’s done for them.

49. The mission of the church is not to change the world but to disciple the nations by baptizing and teaching (Matt 28:19-20).

50. Anyone who casts a vision and demands allegiance to it sets up a new papacy among the churches.

51. Many evangelicals have come under the tyranny of the new papacy by trading the Pope of Rome for seeker-driven vision casting mini-popes.

52. The old papacy arrogated the Church’s treasury of merits; the new papacy arrogates the Church’s treasury.

53. The old papacy said, “As the coin in the coffer clings, so the soul from purgatory springs”; The new papacy says, “As the tithe in the bucket clings, your finances from under a curse springs.”

54. The old papacy counted plenary indulgences; the new papacy counts nickels and noses.

55. The old papacy suppressed the Gospel through canon law; the new papacy suppresses the Gospel through allegiance to the leader’s vision which is a law unto itself.

56. The old papacy was a friend of Caesar; the new papacy is BFF’s with mammon.

57. The old papacy bound a man’s conscience for the sake of his wallet; the new papacy binds a man’s wallet for the sake of his conscience.

58. The old papacy promulgated infallible dogma; the new papacy casts visions that cannot be questioned or challenged.

59. The old papacy claims to sit on the seat of Peter; the new papacy claims to sit on the mandate of the culture.

60. The old papacy reserved the right to judge doctrine and practice; the new papacy judges doctrine to be an impediment to church growth and life transformation.

61. The old papacy had a college of cardinals; the new papacy has church growth consultants.

62. Just as popes and councils have erred in the past, so vision casting leaders err in the present.

63. God teaches us in his written word that the false teachers, not sound ones, rely on their dreams and visions. (Jude 8, Jer 23:25–27)

64. Pastors exist to serve the church. They are not celebrities who exist to be served by the church in order to build their name brands.

65. When a pastor spends 50 minutes telling stories about his life and throws in a quick nod to Jesus at the end, he’s preaching himself not Christ. (2 Cor 4:5)

66. Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth.” (Matthew 6:19) He did not say to His pastors to build 16,000 square foot mansions for yourselves here on earth.

67. Jesus makes it perfectly clear that money loving 'pastors' do not love God! Instead, they hate and despise God. (Luke 16:13)

68. No where in scripture does God demand that you "step out in faith & sow your best seed offering" to earn a blessing or miracle from Him.

69. “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!” (Acts 8:20)

70. Jesus taught us to pray the Lord’s Prayer. He did not teach us to pray Sun Stand Still prayers.

71. Jesus taught us to pray the Lord’s Prayer. He did not teach us to pray Circlemaker prayers.

72. Christian prayer humbly asks God to supply our needs.

73. Audaciously proclaiming and declaring God’s blessings over yourself is not Christian prayer prompted by humble and penitent faith in Christ.

74. Standing in front of a mirror and declaring how wonderful you are is a Satanic narcissistic delusion that is the opposite of humble and penitent faith in Christ.

75. Your words do not have power to create the future. You’re not God.

76. Having your best life now means that you will spend eternity in Hell.

77. God never condemns sound doctrine but commands His pastors to teach it.

78. Those who twists God’s word and teach innovative ‘doctrines’ are the true agents of division, not those who teach sound doctrine. (Rom. 16:17)

79. All scripture is God breathed, not all ‘still small voices’.

80. No so-called “move of the spirit” today is from the Holy Spirit if it tells Christians to ordain women, bless same-sex marriages or believe or do anything contrary to the written word of God.

81. Jude 18 says that Bible twisters and heretics are devoid of the Spirit.

82. Those who twist God’s word and do not rightly exegete it are lying or are demonically deceived when they claim to be receiving direct revelation from God through dreams, visions, downloads and words of knowledge.

83. There is no such thing as Christianity 2.0. The faith has been once for all delivered to the saints. (Jude 3)

84. Doubt ≠ Faith. “faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

85. It is Satan who undermines the authority of God’s Word by asking, “Did God really say?”

86. Contrary to popular opinion, Jesus is a hater. In Revelation 2:6 Jesus says that He hates the works of heretics.

87. God is intolerant of false “gospels”.

88. God’s word says that, “If anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be damned.” (Gal. 1:9)

89. The church belongs to no man but to Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God, and Lord of the church.

90. Woe to the false prophets who cry, “Vision, vision” when there is no vision.

91. Again, woe to those who say, “Purpose, purpose,” when there is no purpose.

92. Again, woe to those who say, “Gospel, gospel,” when there is no Gospel.

93. Blessed are those who say, “Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.”

94. Christians are to be exhorted that they be diligent in following Christ, their Head, through all suffering, death, and hell;

95. And thus be confident of entering into heaven through many trials and tribulations, rather than through the assurance of outward peace, unity, and happiness.

The Mark of a False Teacher: They Draw Away The Disciples After Themselves

The Apostle Paul when he warned the elders of the church in Ephesus about the false teachers who would be coming after his departure gave them and us a simple way to spot the the wolves. Said Paul:

“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore be alert” (Acts 20:28–31)

Note well what Acts 20:30 says about the fierce wolves, they draw away the disciples after themselves.

The 5th century Church Father Ammonius of Alexandria, preaching on this text noted:

“In order to draw away the disciples after them.” Heretics strive to make the people their own instead of the Lord’s, so that they might boast in themselves...Paul himself checked this beforehand when he silenced and censured those who were saying, “I’m Paul’s; I’m Apollos’s; I’m Cephas’s,” since he did not want their faith to be explained by the name of a person but by Christ’s name; he wanted them all to be called Christians, even though they had been taught by different teachers. Accordingly, whenever all the teachers strive for the same goal of proclaiming the true faith, of profiting the students while suppressing their own names, they are called, by the same name, Christians."

Dr. Paul Kretzmann in his Popular Commentary noted:

[Paul] knew that after his departure from them, in a future which was not greatly distant, there would enter into the flock from without grievous, ravening, ferocious wolves, false teachers that would have no mercy on the flock, but would use every means to disrupt the congregation, to murder the souls by trying to persuade them to accept false doctrine. And in addition there would be factionists from within, out of their own membership, men that would arise...with a doctrine full of perverse and antichristian matter, with the intention of drawing away those that were already Christians, the latter thereby becoming guilty of apostasy from the truth and from the true Church of Christ. These two dangers looming up before them, the elders of Ephesus should watch, be on their guard, exert constant vigilance."

With these thoughts in mind, I would like you to listen to this episode of Fighting for the Faith in which I answer the question, "Is Jesus or Steven Furtick The One Whom the Prophets Longed to See?"

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIASr2DUXLE?rel=0&w=560&h=315]

If Steven Furtick is a true Christian teacher why is his ministry marked by pointing the people at Elevation to Steven Furtick rather than Christ?

I Know the Plans I Have For You: Rightly Understanding Jeremiah 29:11 — One of the Most Abused Verses in The Bible

Satan, the deceiver of the nations, has a sick sense of humor. He doesn't care if you read your Bible so long as you misread it and don't rightly understand what God has revealed in its pages. Furthermore, as an eyewitness to the events recorded in scripture, Satan knows full well what was happening at the time each Biblical story was lived out and fully understands what God was trying to accomplish in each person whose life is recorded in Holy Writ. That being the case, I'm convinced that Satan relishes, in a truly sick way, when he successfully deceives today's Christians into believing the exact polar opposite "truth" to the one that is actually revealed in a passage of scripture. Think of this accomplishment as the ultimate satanic irony and pulling it off requires all of Satan's cleverness and cunning.

One of the clearest examples of this type of satanic irony is how most Christians today misunderstand and misapply Jeremiah 29:11 which states, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope". Ripped from its context, today's popular false teachers use this verse to peddle a false gospel that says that the Good News of Christianity is that God is in your corner and has great plans for your life — plans that recognize your greatness and the latent potential for world changing significance that lies dormant inside of you. This false gospel doesn't warn sinners to flee the wrath of God against sin by repenting and trusting in Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Instead, it purposely focuses its victims on themselves and assures them that they are very important and that God isn't interested in punishing sinners but is primarily focused on assisting people achieve their true potential and discovering the champion within. The irony is that when you read this passage in context and take the time to understand what this passage of scripture is truly saying, you'll discover that this popular false gospel is what the LORD is warning the exiles of Israel about.

Prophet_jeremiah__image_5_sjpg2244

Even more ironic is the fact that today's popular false teachers, the ones who have taught Christians this false understanding of this passage, are identical to the false prophets that Jeremiah is warning against. It is also critical for a correct understanding of this passage to recognize that Israel was punished and sent into captivity because of their stubborn refusal to repent of their sins and that the fault for this lies in great part at the feet of the false teachers and false prophets who were teaching the exact same false message that we are hearing in many churches today. Jeremiah 23 makes this parallel clear when it says of the false teachers of Jeremiah's day:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’” (Jeremiah 23:16–17)

In other words, Satan has deceived many Christians in the exact same way that he deceived Israel during the time of Jeremiah. The sick Satanic irony is that he's successfully resuscitated this ancient heresy by means of a false reading of Jeremiah 29, which is a passage of scripture that sternly warns against this particular false teaching. To help you see and understand this satanic irony, I've reproduced, below, a portion of Dr. Paul Kretzmann's Popular Commentary. Take a few minutes to work through this passage with Dr. Kretzmann and you'll not only have a proper understanding of Jeremiah 29:11 you'll also see Satan's sick trick for what it is and hopefully will be compelled to speak up and help open the eyes of those who've fallen for Satan's deception.

Jeremiah's Letter to the Exiles and Its Consequences: An Excerpt from Dr. Paul Kretzmann's Popular Commentary

THE CONTENTS OF THE LETTER. — Just as certain false prophets in Jerusalem had tried to arouse and maintain false hopes in the inhabitants of the capital, thus also certain men of the same type were active among the exiles who had been taken to Babylon at the time of Jeconiah. The result was that a spirit of discontent and restlessness took hold of the Jews, which not only increased the bitterness of their affliction, but also tended to break down all moral restraint. Jeremiah therefore, by God's command, sent a letter to the exiled Jews, in which he gives them some excellent rules of behavior in the midst of the trying circumstances in which they found themselves. V. 1. Now, these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders, to those who had survived the hardships of the exile up to that time, which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon, to the congregation of the exiled Jews, disorganized as it was in the conditions of the exile, v. 2. (after that Jeconiah, the king, and the queen, Nehushta, the dowager, daughter of Einathan, 2 Kings 24:8,15, and the eunuchs, the courtiers or chamberlains, high court officers, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, all the artisans and craftsmen of the city, 2 Kings 24:16, were departed from Jerusalem,) v. 3. by the hand of Elasah, the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah, the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent unto Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, nothing further being known of the message carried by this embassy, except that Zedekiah ruled only by the pleasure of the Babylonian king and was bound to use the highest diplomacy to hold his position), saying, the actual wording of Jeremiah's letter now being given, v. 4. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, His exact words being given in the message, as throughout the book, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon, the fact that they were suffering the just punishment of their transgressions being made fundamental in this address, as preparing the way for repentance: v. 5. Build ye houses and dwell in them, thereby preparing for a long stay in the land of their captivity, against the advice of the false prophets who were trying to mislead them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them, altogether in agreement with the idea that their homes would, for some time, be in the strange country; v. 6. take ye wives and beget sons and daughters, thereby establishing families; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, for the giving in marriage is essentially a function of the parents, a duty which they dared not disregard, that they may bear sons and daughters, that ye may be increased there and not diminished, for the nation was not to die out during the period of the Babylonian Exile. V. 7. And seek the peace, the welfare, of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, striving with all their might to promote its best interests, and pray unto the Lord for it, such intercessions being commanded by God even in the case of a heathenish government; for true religion teaches patient submission to the government in all things which are not in conflict with God's Word; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace, the Lord blessing a country for the sake of the believers among its citizens, and they, in turn, being benefited by the blessings which the Lord grants their country. V. 8. For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Let not your prophets and your diviners that be in the midst of you, whose business flourished because of the willing credulity of the people, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed, for it was the attitude of the people themselves, in encouraging prophecies of this kind, which gave them false hopes, that was at the bottom of the whole situation. V. 9. For they prophesy falsely unto you, with a lie they posed as prophets, in My name, adorning their base deceptions with the name of the Lord, insisting that He had sent them; I have not sent them, saith the Lord, their claims being utterly unfounded. Over against their deceitful promises, therefore, He tells them the plain truth concerning the length of their captivity. V. 10. For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon, counting from the time the first exiles were taken to Babylon with their King Jeconiah, I will visit you, turn to them in merciful kindness, and perform My good word toward you, cause His promise to them to be fulfilled, in causing you to return to this place, to Jerusalem and Judah, the home of their fathers. V. 11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, He would still accomplish His merciful purposes with regard to them, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end, literally, "future and hope," that is, the end which they desired, but which could be theirs only on condition of their showing true repentance. The Lord shows in just what manner the Jews would continue in their course: first, in vain confidence, relying upon the empty promises of the false prophets; then, in deepest despondency, believing that they were doomed. to extermination; but finally, in true repentance, when they would be accepted by the Lord. V. 12. Then shall ye call upon Me, in a realization of their sinfulness and guilt, and ye shall go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you, turning to them in the grace and mercy which He much prefers to exercise. V. 13. And ye shall seek Me and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart, if their repentance proved to be sincere, of the right kind. Cp. Leviticus 26:40-45. V. 14. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord, Isaiah 55:6; and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord, for the Jews were finally dispersed throughout the various countries of the world empire; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. Cp. Deut. 4:29-30;30:3-5. The return from exile was only the beginning of the fulfillment of our prophecy, which clearly has Messianic significance. V. 15. Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon, literally, "as far as Babylon," the people of Judah insisting that the ministry of the prophets extended far beyond the confines of the Holy Land, and that therefore the threatening prophecy had no effect upon them, v. 16. know that thus saith the Lord of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, in this case Zedekiah, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, those remaining after the first company of exiles had left, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity: v. 17. thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, the dreaded scourges which are the worst punishments of nations, and will make them like vile figs, Jeremiah 24:8, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil. V. 18. And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, scattered throughout the kingdoms which belonged to the great world empire, to be a curse, an object of execration, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, to be jeered at and treated with contempt on every side, among all the nations whither I have driven them, v. 19. because they have not hearkened to My words, saith the Lord, which I sent unto them by My servants, the prophets, rising up early and sending them, in eager zeal for the welfare of their souls; but ye would not hear, saith the Lord. Note that the change from the third to the second person places the exiled Jews into the same class with those who were still in Judah, for all were alike guilty. V. 20. Hear ye therefore the Word of the Lord, all ye of the captivity whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon, for the Chaldeans, in this instance, were only the instruments in the hands of the Lord: V. 21. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab, the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah, the son of Maaseiah, two men who are otherwise unknown, which prophesy a lie unto you in My name, since they were evidently the leaders of the false prophets, Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes, this execution evidently taking place because the king feared their exciting and rebellious preaching, v. 22. and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, that is, the exiles made this event a proverb, a formula of imprecation, saying, The Lord make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire, a Chaldean form of punishment in general use at that time, cp. Daniel 3:6, v. 23. because they have committed villainy in Israel, a deed of shame, a sinful folly, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, acts of gross immorality often being associated with false teaching, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them; even I know and am a Witness, saith the Lord. Jehovah is not only intimately acquainted with the truth, but also brings it to light and testifies of it before men.

Words of Comfort In the Midst of God's Discipline

Having worked through this passage with Dr. Kretzmann you now understand that Jeremiah 29:11 is not promising some epic earthly plan or destiny for your life but is instead a message of comfort to those whom God has severely disciplined. The right way to understand this text is to read it as a message of tender fatherly love in the midst of painful discipline. These words of hope to the exiles were intended to comfort and protect them during a time when it would have been all too easy to believe that God had abandoned them. Christians today should recognize that we have similar promises given to us in the New Testament that we can cling to during those times when God is disciplining us. These words of hope are found in Hebrews 12:7–11 which says:

“It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Seeing Jeremiah 29:11 for what it is gives us great hope and focuses us on God's great love for us even when everything that we see and experience would convince us that God hates us and has abandoned us. But, the false twisted and satanic misreading of Jeremiah 29:11 focuses you on yourself and some mythical dream destiny that you're supposedly going to fulfill. Despite the fact that the false misreading of this text may provide some type of comfort or inspiration in the short term, in the long run it will cause its victims to despair as their bodies break down, health and wealth fail them and death approaches. Ultimately, the false misreading of Jeremiah 29:11 provides a false hope that destroys faith and leaves its victims empty, hopeless and in peril of the fires of hell.

Do you now see Satan's sick ironic trick for what it is?

Why Context, Context, Context Is So Vital for Sound Biblical Exegesis

Over and again I emphasize on my radio program that the three most important rules for sound Biblical exegesis are 1. Context 2. Context and 3. Context. These rules are so vital that, as you are about to see, they could save you a lot of heartache and remorse. Below is a photo taken by a listener at a local organic grocery store of a shelf full of products with the name Ezekiel 4:9.

1379425_583092268393828_765154446_n

Clearly the makers of these products consider themselves to be selling healthy "Biblical Cereals" and who could argue with that? If you open your Bible and read the verse that is printed on the box it says,

“And you [Ezekiel], take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer, and put them into a single vessel and make your bread from them.”

The verse seems to be prescribing a healthy recipe directly from the LORD Himself, right? Wrong!

If you read this entire passage in context you will discover that there is a secret ingredient that the makers of Ezekiel 4:9 strategically omitted. Had they named their products Ezekiel 4:9-15 there isn't a person on the planet who'd want to purchase, yet alone eat these cereals. Here's the full context:

““And you, take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer, and put them into a single vessel and make your bread from them. During the number of days that you lie on your side, 390 days, you shall eat it. And your food that you eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day; from day to day you shall eat it. And water you shall drink by measure, the sixth part of a hin; from day to day you shall drink. And you shall eat it as a barley cake, baking it in their sight on human dung.” And the LORD said, “Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread unclean, among the nations where I will drive them.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I have never defiled myself. From my youth up till now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has tainted meat come into my mouth.” Then he said to me, “See, I assign to you cow’s dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread.” (Ezekiel 4:9–15)

Now do you see why context, context, context is so vital for sound Biblical Exegesis?

New PIRA Survey Reveals Real Reasons the Unchurched Don't Attend Church

INDIANAPOLIS - A newly released PIRA Survey of the Biblical texts reveals the real reasons why the unchurched do not attend church and the results are sending shockwaves through the seeker-driven and missional camps.

Chris Rosebrough, lead researcher for PIRA, the organization responsible for this Biblical survey said, "For decades the conventional wisdom in the broader church growth and missional movements has told us that the reason why unchurched people don't attend church is because they think church is boring and irrelevant. Although true, the conventional wisdom has not been able to satisfactorily explain why unchurched people feel that way. Our survey, of the Biblical texts, strove to dig down and uncover the real reasons why our pagan non-Christian friends and neighbors feel that way about church. What we discovered was shocking and its implications regarding the newly adopted church methodologies in seeker-driven churches will challenge the core assumptions of the entire church growth industry!"

The PIRA Survey reveals that non-Christians, contrary to the assumptions of church growth consultants, are not basically good people who would love to attend church and worship God if only their pop-culture tastes and preferences were employed in church. Instead, the survey reveals that the unchurched abhor and hate God, they're born dead in trespasses and sins, they do not seek God, they love the darkness and sin and hate the light, and their continual intentions and thoughts are only evil. Please consult the chart below. Click on the Chart to Enlarge it.

PiraSurvey

Said Rosebrough, "The results of this Biblical survey make it undeniably clear that the only way you could make church 'relevant' to a non-Christian would be to give them what they want i.e. sin, idolatry, false doctrine, fleshly delights, and worldly entertainment. But when you bring those things into the church then your church ceases to be a church and just becomes a popular entertainment venue with a thin Christian-ish veneer. And, since unbelievers hate God, they'll leave as soon as you try to confront them with their sins or try to make Jesus and Him crucified the true center of the church service. The reason for this is that the unchurched don't want to have anything to do with the One True God. They hate Him and the cross is foolishness to them! I guess that's why regeneration is so important. Because if you haven't been born again then there is no way you're going to think that church is relevant."

The raw data for this survey is reproduced below.

Genesis 2:15–17 “The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.””

Genesis 3:6 “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned”

Romans 5:19 “for as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners

Genesis 6:5 “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Genesis 8:21 “the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth”

Psalms 51:5 “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

John 3:19 “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”

Ephesians 2:1–3 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind”

Psalms 14:2–3 “The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God...They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.”

Romans 3:10–18 “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.””

Isaiah 59:2 “but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”

Exodus 33:20 “But,” he [the LORD] said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.””

John 1:10 “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.”

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Can We Trust the History in the New Testament Documents?

Can We Trust the History in the New Testament documents? The short answer to this question is, absolutely!

From time to time, Christians may encounter an atheist or nonbeliever who is armed with the latest "higher" critical arguments against the veracity of the New Testament documents. These opponents of Christianity claim to have evidence that Matthew didn't write the Gospel of Matthew or that the Gospel of John wasn't written until the early 3rd century, etc. But, if you take the time to read good scholarship on these matters you will find that, for all their claims to being deep thinkers and strict evidentialists, the arguments employed by these atheists and "higher" critics against the historical reliability of the New Testament documents are not based in solid evidence. But are, in fact, based in skeptical conjecture and unfounded assertions that, ironically, are irrational and stand contrary to the solid evidence.

Christians have nothing to fear from the historical evidence regarding the New Testament documents. Instead, when Christians take the time to read good scholarship that examines the historical evidence for the New Testament they will find that their faith is built up and strengthened and that they are then armed with solid arguments and evidence to refute the popularized propaganda that masquerades as scholarship that is all too often marshaled against Christianity.

I recommend that Christians take the time to purchase and read F.F. Bruce's classic work on this subject entitled, The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?

Below is a brief excerpt from this wonderful and short book:

About the middle of the last century it was confidently asserted by a very influential school of thought that some of the most important books of the New Testament, including the Gospels and the Acts, did not exist before the thirties of the second century AD.16 This conclusion was the result not so much of historical evidence as of philosophical presupositions. Even then there was sufficient evidence to show how unfounded these theories were, as Lightfoot, Tischendorf, Tregelles and others demonstrated in their writings; but the amount of such evidence available in our own day is so much greater and more conclusive that a first-century date for most of the New Testament writings cannot reasonably be denied, no matter what our philosophical presuppositions may be.

The evidence for our New Testament writings is ever so much greater than the evidence for many writings of classical authors, the authenticity of which no one dreams of questioning. And if the New Testament were a collection of secular writings, their authenticity would generally be regarded as beyond all doubt. It is a curious fact that historians have often been much readier to trust the New Testament records than have many theologians." Somehow or other, there are people who regard a `sacred book' as ipso facto under suspicion, and demand much more corroborative evidence for such a work than they would for an ordinary secular or pagan writing. From the viewpoint of the historian, the same standards must be applied to both. But we do not quarrel with those who want more evidence for the New Testament than for other writings; firstly, because the universal claims which the New Testament makes upon mankind are so absolute, and the character and works of its chief Figure so unparalleled, that we want to be as sure of its truth as we possibly can; and secondly, because in point of fact there is much more evidence for the New Testament than for other ancient writings of comparable date.

There are in existence over 5,000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament in whole or in part. The best and most important of these go back to somewhere about AD 350, the two most important being the Codex Vaticanus, the chief treasure of the Vatican Library in Rome, and the well-known Codex Sinaiticus, which the British Government purchased from the Soviet Government for £loo, ooo on Christmas Day, 1933, and which is now the chief treasure of the British Museum. Two other important early mss in this country are the Codex Alexandrinus, also in the British Museum, written in the fifth century, and the Codex Bezae, in Cambridge University Library, written in the fifth or sixth century, and containing the Gospels and Acts in both Greek and Latin. Perhaps we can appreciate how wealthy the New Testament is in manuscript attestation if we compare the textual material for other ancient historical works. For Caesar's Gallic War (composed between 58 and 50 Bc) there are several extant mss, but only nine or ten are good, and the oldest is some goo years later than Caesar's day. Of the 142 books of the Roman History of Livy (59 BC-AD 17) only thirty-five survive; these are known to us from not more than twenty mss of any consequence, only one of which, and that containing fragments of Books iii-vi, is as old as the fourth century. Of the fourteen books of the Histories of Tacitus (c. AD 100) only four and a half survive; of the sixteen books of his Annals, ten survive in full and two in part. The text of these extant portions of his two great historical works depends entirely on two mss, one of the ninth century and one of the eleventh. The extant mss of his minor works (Dialogus de Oratoribus, Agricola, Germania) all descend from a codex of the tenth century. The History of Thucydides (c. 460-400 BC) is known to us from eight Mss, the earliest belonging to c. AD 900, and a few papyrus scraps, belonging to about the beginning of the Christian era. The same is true of the History of Herodotus (c. 488-428 BC). Yet no classical scholar would listen to an argument that the authenticity of Herodotus or Thucydides is in doubt because the earliest mss of their works which are of any use to us are over 1,300 years later than the originals.

But how different is the situation of the New Testament in this respect! In addition to the two excellent mss of the fourth century mentioned above, which are the earliest of some thousands known to us, considerable fragments remain of papyrus copies of books of the New Testament dated from ioo to 200 years earlier still. The Chester Beatty Biblical Papyri, the existence of which was made public in 1931, consist of portions of eleven papyrus codices, three of which contained most of the New Testament writings. One of these, containing the four Gospels with Acts, belongs to the first half of the third century; another, containing Paul's letters to churches and the Epistle to the Hebrews, was copied at the beginning of the third century; the third, containing Revelation, belongs to the second half of the same century. A more recent discovery consists of some papyrus fragments dated by papyrological experts not later than AD 150, published in Fragments of an Unknown Gospel and other Early Christian Papyri, by H. I. Bell and T. C. Skeat (1935). These fragments contain what has been thought by some to be portions of a fifth Gospel having strong affinities with the canonical four; but much more probable is the view expressed in The Times Literary Supplement for 25 April 1935, `that these fragments were written by someone who had the four Gospels before him and knew them well; that they did not profess to be an independent Gospel; but were paraphrases of the stories and other matter in the Gospels designed for explanation and instruction, a manual to teach people the Gospel stories'.

Earlier still is a fragment of a papyrus codex containing John 18:31-33, 37-38, now in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, dated on palaeographical grounds around AD 130, showing that the latest of the four Gospels, which was written, according to tradition, at Ephesus between AD 9o and loo, was circulating in Egypt within about forty years of its composition (if, as is most likely, this papyrus originated in Egypt, where it was acquired in 1917). It must be regarded as being, by half a century, the earliest extant fragment of the New Testament.

A more recently discovered papyrus manuscript of the same Gospel, while not so early as the Rylands papyrus, is incomparably better preserved; this is the Papyrus Bodmer II, whose discovery was announced by the Bodmer Library of Geneva in 1956; it was written about AD 200, and contains the first fourteen chapters of the Gospel of John with but one lacuna (of twenty-two verses), and considerable portions of the last seven chapters.19 Attestation of another kind is provided by allusions to and quotations from the New Testament books in other early writings. The authors known as the Apostolic Fathers wrote chiefly between AD 9o and 16o, and in their works we find evidence for their acquaintance with most of the books of the New Testament. In three works whose date is probably round about AD 100 - the `Epistle of Barnabas, written perhaps in Alexandria; the Didache, or `Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, produced somewhere in Syria or Palestine; and the letter sent to the Corinthian church by Clement, bishop of Rome, about AD 96 - we find fairly certain quotations from the common tradition of the Synoptic Gospels, from Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians, Ephesians, Titus, Hebrews,l Peter, and possible quotations from other books of the New Testament. In the letters written by Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, as he journeyed to his martyrdom in Rome in AD 115, there are reasonably identifiable quotations from Matthew, John, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and possible allusions to mark, Luke, Acts, Colossians, 2 Thessalonians, Philemon, Hebrews, and 1 Peter. His younger contemporary, Polycarp, in a letter to the Philippians (c. 120) quotes from the common tradition of the Synoptic Gospels, from Acts, Romans, i and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Hebrews, i Peter, and i John. And so we might go on through the writers of the second century, amassing increasing evidence of their familiarity with and recognition of the authority of the New Testament writings. So far as the Apostolic Fathers are concerned, the evidence is collected and weighed in a work called The New Testament in the Apostolic Fathers, recording the findings of a committee of the Oxford Society of Historical Theology in 1905.

Nor is it only in orthodox Christian writers that we find evidence of this sort. It is evident from the recently discovered writings of the Gnostic school of Valentinus that before the middle of the second century most of the New Testament books were as well known and as fully venerated in that heretical circle as they were in the Catholic Church.20 The study of the kind of attestation found in mss and quotations in later writers is connected with the approach known as Textual Criticism.21 This is a most important and fascinating branch of study, its object being to determine as exactly as possible from the available evidence the original words of the documents in question. It is easily proved by experiment that it is difficult to copy out a passage of any considerable length without making one or two slips at least. When we have documents like our New Testament writings copied and recopied thousands of times, the scope for copyists' errors is so enormously increased that it is surprising there are no more than there actually are. Fortunately, if the great number of MSS increases the number of scribal errors, it increases proportionately the means of correcting such errors, so that the margin of doubt left in the process of recovering the exact original wording is not so large as might be feared; it is in truth remarkably small. The variant readings about which any doubt remains among textual critics of the New Testament affect no material question of historic fact or of Christian faith and practice.

To sum up, we may quote the verdict of the late Sir Frederic Kenyon, a scholar whose authority to make pronouncements on ancient mss was second to none:

`The interval then between the dates of original composition and the earliest extant evidence becomes so small as to be in fact negligible, and the last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established."'(1)

This book and a few others should be in every Christian's library (not to collect dust but to actually be read and understood). Here is a short list of books on this subject. Some of them are for beginners and others are more advanced.
