Philly drag queen to read Dr. Seuss to kids at Church

So a PUBLIC SCHOOL deems this inappropriate, and a CHURCH steps up to have him read to children. You can't make this stuff up. Martha Graham Cracker—a prominent Philly drag queen and lead singer of the aptly-named Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret—was recently invited to read Dr. Seuss to children at a school in New Jersey, but then disinvited when school officials deemed the choice was inappropriate for children.

Here is the story from

Screen Shot 2015-12-27 at 4.30.20 PMAfter Graham Cracker accepted, officials of the after-school program told Simmons that his choice was not acceptable. Simmons insisted on keeping Graham Cracker's appearance, writing back to the group: "I’m in a bit of a quandary here…I’m being told by some of my superiors in this organization that this guest choice is inappropriate. I cannot, however, get any of them to tell me why or how Martha Graham Cracker reading Dr. Seuss to our after-school program is inappropriate." Philadelphia's Christ Church Neighborhood House has since stepped up and offered Graham Cracker the opportunity to read Dr. Seuss to children this Sunday, March 3rd. The description of the event on Facebook reads:

This Sunday, in light of the controversy surrounding Martha Graham Cracker reading Dr. Seuss to kids, Martha Graham Cracker will, in fact, read Dr. Seuss to your kids. And sing a few songs. Admission is free.

Nothing more needs to be said except thank you to the good people at Christ Church who have opened their doors to us and to your kids.

Doors will open at 2 p.m., and the event will begin at 2:15 p.m.

Martha has received a great deal of support on the group's Facebook page, but Haddonfield Child Care has yet to issue further comment. [The Huffington Post]
